Relay NC allows people to place and receive calls to and from anywhere in the world (using English or Spanish language only). Calls originating from a country outside of the US may also access Relay NC by dialing 1-605-224-1837.

TTY Public Payphones

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has issued an order that outlines an interim plan for access to public pay phone service through relay services. The current order states that:

Voicemail / AMR (Answering Machine Retrieval)

Dial 7-1-1 or 1-800-735-2962

TTY users can request Relay NC to retrieve messages from their voice answering machines or voicemail.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Dial the TTY number, 7-1-1 or 1-800-735-2962.
  2. To request answering machine retrieval, type "AMR" with instructions or password and then "GA."
  3. The relay operator will type, "PLS PLACE YOUR HANDSET NEXT TO YOUR ANS MACHINE AND TURN ON GA."
  4. Place your handset on the speaker part of the answering machine until all messages have been retrieved.
  5. Then place the handset back on the TTY and type "GA."
  6. The relay operator will type your messages.

Directory Assistance

Relay NC will relay Directory Assistance (DA) calls between TTY users and the Local Exchange Carrier (LEC) DA operator. Once the caller makes the request, the relay operator will contact the appropriate LEC DA operator. After obtaining the number, the caller may choose to place the call through Relay NC or dial it directly TTY to TTY.

900 Service

Dial 1-900-230-3300

Relay NC provides a toll-free 900 number that connects relay callers to any 900 or 800 pay-per-call service. The caller is responsible for direct billing.

How does it work?
Relay users dial a toll-free 1-900-230-3300 to connect with the Relay NC. The relay operator will then dial the requested outbound 900 or 800 pay-per-call service number. Upon connection to the 900 number, billing procedures will begin.

Billing procedures may vary depending on the 900 service called. For further assistance with 900 calls, call Relay NC 24-hour customer service at
